The FroYo 5k is this Saturday, May 30th in Scottsdale. This race benefits the Phoenix Children’s Hospital Foundation and features a customized cup of Yogurtland frozen yogurt at the finish line. Don’t let numb toes keep you from finishing this race. Toe numbness affects many runners and we are here to tell you it doesn’t have to be this way! You can run without pain or discomfort and cross the finish line every time.

There are different reasons a runner might suffer from numb toes during a race. These may include:

  • Footwear: Yes, your beloved shoes may be causing you pain and suffering while running! First, make sure your laces aren’t tied too tightly. This can cut off your circulation and reduce blood flow to your toes. It may also be that your shoes don’t fit you properly. Make sure that you have plenty of wiggle room for your toes.
  • Raynaud’s Disease: If your shoes are not to blame, it may be a different type of circulatory issue. Raynaud’s Disease causes your blood vessels to constrict, which creates a lesser flow of blood to your limbs.
  • Neuromas: A neuroma is a swollen nerve that can be located near the toes. Putting repeated pressure on a neuroma can make it worse. Sometimes changing your shoes can relieve the symptoms, but other times surgery is required to fix this problem.
  • Compartment Syndrome: A build-up of pressure in the muscles from overexertion due to physical activity is to blame for Compartment Syndrome. This can be potentially damaging to the muscles and tissue so it’s best to get checked out to make sure that everything looks okay.

These are the most common reasons for toe numbness while running, but there are other causes as well. Schedule an appointment with Dr. Peyman Elison by calling (623) 584-5556.
