The summer heat probably has you feeling like you want to wear as little on your body as possible. While we understand the feeling, it’s important to avoid poor quality sandals if you have diabetes. Your feet are less protected in flip flops (and other flimsy types of sandals) and that can leave you susceptible to sustaining wounds that won’t heal and can turn into diabetic ulcers.

Sandals can be dangerous

Diabetes is a disease that wreaks havoc on your body all the down to the tips of your toes. Peripheral neuropathy is a side effect that occurs when your nerves become damaged due to poorly managed diabetes. If you have peripheral neuropathy you might be unable to experience feelings of pain in your outer extremities. For instance, if you step on something sharp you might not even notice it until you saw the wound. Flimsy flip-flops don’t protect your feet enough to be considered good shoes for a diabetic. Sharp objects could cut your feet or you could stub your toe on something hard and not even realize it. Make sure your sandals are made of quality material, offer good arch support, cover more of the foot than a flip flop, and can even accommodate an orthotic if necessary.

Furthermore, it’s extremely important to make sure you are checking your feet every single day if you have diabetes. Take some time out of your down to sit down and thoroughly inspect your feet. A good time to do it is after you take a bath or a shower. This way you can get into a daily routine. Look at every side and angle of your feet to make sure there are no wounds that weren’t there previously. If you do have a wound keep track of the healing process to be certain it’s healing the way it should be. If it’s not, get to a doctor immediately.
