There are essentially two different courses of treatment we use to help patients overcome pain and achieve optimal foot and ankle health – surgical and nonsurgical. Conservative foot care practices are generally preferred by both our doctors and patients. If we can fix your problem without having to use an invasive procedure, we will. Of course, there are times when this is not possible. Fortunately, there are foot and ankle surgeries which can be quite beneficial. How to Know if You Need Foot Surgery | Experienced Surprise, AZ Podiatrist

We provide comprehensive foot and ankle services at Fixing Feet Institute, but we do see some issues more frequently than others. Heel pain, sports injuries, toe deformities, and arthritis will provide a starting point as we determine the best course of treatment.

This might be a bit surprising, but the majority of sports injuries do not require surgical care. Perhaps the misconception comes from following professional sports, where fans often hear about athletes undergoing surgery to repair torn ligaments or various knee injuries. There are instances where a non-professional needs a surgical procedure, but when tissues can heal on their own, conservative care is used to protect the damaged area, manage pain levels, and ensure proper healing.

Heel pain is another category of issues we see often, but does not usually need surgery. Plantar fasciitis and Achilles tendinitis, two of the top sources of heel pain for adults, simply need rest and time away from high-impact activities.

In some cases, like toe deformities, we might be able to manage symptoms and relieve pain with nonsurgical care, but the condition can only be completely corrected with surgery. This applies to bunions, hammertoes, claw toes, and mallet toes. These conditions are progressive and will worsen when left untreated, so even conservative care makes a big difference.

In a similar fashion, arthritic conditions can be addressed with either conservative foot care or surgery. It really depends on the severity and patient goals.

As noted, our hope is to use conservative treatment methods to relieve your pain and improve the condition without needing to use surgery. Of course, you can take comfort in the fact we are experts in foot and ankle surgical procedures and successfully perform them for patients when necessary. No matter which treatment path works best, you can rest assured knowing your health and wellbeing is our primary concern here at Fixing Feet Institute.
