Onychomycosis, another name for toenail fungus, is a fungal condition that affects the toenails.  Various fungi, such as dermatophytes, yeasts, and molds, are to blame for their development. The infection typically appears as a white or yellow area under the nail's tip. If toenail fungus is left untreated, this spot can grow deeper into the nail, causing cracking, thickness, and discoloration.

In some situations, it can also cause pain in the toenails. Toenail fungus is a common foot problem we treat in our office. This condition can cause complications, especially in elderly people and those with certain illnesses like diabetes or compromised immune systems.

Choosing the Best Toenail Fungus Treatment

Toenail fungus can be a frustrating foot problem to treat. Since the fungus is active under the toenail, it can be hard to treat the root cause. Treatment for toenail fungus can take a long time before results are seen. In our Surprise, AZ podiatry office, we offer a variety of treatments for toenail fungus.

Common Toenail Fungus Treatments

  1. Oral Medication- Toenail fungus is frequently treated with oral antifungal drugs. These drugs either eliminate the fungus or stop it from spreading. These medications often require additional testing to be sure it doesn’t affect other areas of the body, namely the liver.
  2. Topical Treatments- Another treatment used is topical, including creams, ointments, and nail polish. These are applied to the toenails as often as 3x a day.
  3. Laser Therapy- Laser therapy uses laser light to kill the fungus under the nail bed. This procedure is quick and painless. It attacks the problem at its source.
  4. Surgery- In serious cases, surgical removal of the nail may be the best treatment option.
