The bad news? A lot of folks try to ignore the pain and hope it will go away, but if left untreated, heel pain can be very disabling. Just "walking it off" is one of the worst things you can do for your heel.
There is no one exact cause of heel pain, but there is a common connection between many of the conditions that trigger pain. What it basically boils down to is that your feet take a beating all day long. Think about it—they are carrying the entire weight of your body! If you take an extra long run one day, or even wear the wrong shoes, you may begin to feel pain in your heels.
Conditions That Cause Heel Pain
- Plantar Fasciitis (Heel Spur). Inflammation of the plantar fascia—a band of connective tissue that stretches from the bottom of the heel bone to the ball of the foot—is called plantar fasciitis by medical professionals. Inflammation occurs when too much strain causes small tears in the plantar fascia. Heel spurs usually are caused by repetitive stress (walking or running), wearing worn-out shoes, or being overweight and starting a new exercise program.
- Tarsal Tunnel Syndrome. This condition involves damage to the tibial nerve, which gives movement and sensation to the calf and foot muscles. The nerve can be damaged by putting pressure on the nerve for a long period of time or from some kind of direct trauma.
- Posterior Tibial Tendonitis. This is inflammation or tearing of the posterior tibial tendon. Once injured, the tendon can't provide stability and support to the arch of the foot. The result is flat feet.
- Achilles Tendonitis. Achilles tendonitis is inflammation of the Achilles tendon—the largest tendon in the body—which connects the calf muscles to the heel. This condition is very commonly associated with exercise. You may develop Achilles tendonitis if you have not stretched properly before exercising or if you increased your level and amount of activity too quickly.
- Subtalar Joint Arthritis. Arthritis is joint pain and can happen for a few reasons. First of all, age can be a factor because over time, our cartilage becomes worn. You could also develop arthritis after an injury, but not even know about it for many years.
- Stress Fractures and General Fractures. Fractures are broken bones. A stress fracture comes from repeated pressure on an area of the foot that eventually causes it to break. A general fracture is usually caused by one traumatic injury that results in a bone breaking.
- Peripheral Arterial Disease. This condition means your lower extremities are not getting a sufficient blood supply, which can result in numbness or intense pain. Patients with diabetes are especially suseptible to developing this disease.
