Summer is winding down, but the best place to spend the last days before the kids go back to school is still the Surprise Aquatic Center. If you have a Morton’s neuroma you might be feeling a lot of pain and discomfort, which may make you want to just stay off your feet. With the help of some home remedies you can still get out there and enjoy yourself.

A Morton’s neuroma occurs when there is a growth of tissue around the nerves in the toes. It can also be referred to as a “pinched nerve”. There is usually pain, tingling, numbness, or a burning sensation. You may also feel as though you are standing on a pebble in your shoe. If you notice that your feet are a bit swollen or red by your middle toes, or that you have pain associated with walking, you might have this condition. A number of things can cause it to develop, including biomechanical deformities (high arches or flat feet), trauma to the foot, wearing shoes that are too tight in the toe area, and repeated stress.

Treatment is usually done conservatively. You can follow these tips at home to ease your pain. First you should change to different footwear. Make sure you are wearing shoes that offer plenty of room for your feet to breathe. When your toes are squished together in a cramped environment they are more likely to develop problems. You can also try icing your foot to alleviate the inflammation. You can do this several times a day, but make sure the ice pack isn’t going directly on your foot. Massaging the foot or using shoe inserts are other good things to do to help get rid of some of the pressure you might be feeling.
