We might not always think about it, but technology is constantly changing and improving our lives in countless ways. Of course, some of the most impressive advancements come from the field of medicine. Our medical community is constantly finding new, innovative ways to diagnose, treat, and even prevent medical problems.

A prime example of this kind of technological breakthrough—one we are proud to offer for you here at Fixing Feet Institute—is Multiwave Locked System (MLS) laser treatment for foot injuries. Dr. Peyman Elison and Dr. Viedra Elison use our MLS laser to treat various soft tissue problems and conditions. If you have developed pain from sprains, strains, or other sources of inflammation, laser therapy might be our recommended course of treatment.

Of course, we know patients may have questions about MLS laser therapy, what it entails, and who can benefit from it. Here you will find answers to some of the questions we receive on a frequent basis.

General Questions About MLS Laser Therapy

What is MLS laser therapy?

The MLS laser is a noninvasive (no surgery!) technique for treating injuries like strains, sprains, and even general inflammation. Treatment capitalizes on energy produced by concentrated levels of light (lasers) to promote pain relief and soft tissue healing.

How does it work?

During MLS laser treatment sessions, light energy penetrates deeply into your soft tissue and reaches damaged cells. This energy stimulates natural healing processes by speeding up cellular reproduction and growth. The specific light wavelengths produced by the MLS laser initiate strong anti-inflammatory responses by the cells in these tissues, which is essential for reducing swelling and pain.

What advantages does laser therapy have over other forms of therapy?

An MLS laser does not require the use of drugs or surgery, has no known side effects, and is quick and convenient. Studies from prestigious institutions (including Harvard University) have shown that laser therapy is equal to—or more effective than—other forms of physical therapy.

Does it hurt? What does the treatment feel like?

There is little or no sensation during treatment, including no pain. In fact, some find the therapy to even be relaxing.

How long does the treatment take?

A typical session is less than half an hour, with many patients only needing 10 to 15 minutes. This depends a bit on the size of the area we are treating. We determine specific treatment plans on a case-by-case basis, but it isn’t unusual for a patient to undergo 2 or 3 sessions per week.

How long before results are felt?

This is also something that will depend on the patient and case, but you may start to feel improvement as soon as following the first treatment (although a more realistic range is by the third treatment). In the case of chronic conditions, you may need as many as six visits before you start to really feel the benefits from laser therapy. Put simply, everyone responds to this therapy a little bit differently.

Do the results last?

Whereas some treatments are used to address symptoms, laser therapy is about healing the damaged tissues that are causing you pain. When you start feeling better from this treatment, it’s because you are actually better. This means that unless you become injured again, the results are long-lasting.

Can it be used at the same time as other treatments?

Absolutely. In fact, sometimes MLS therapy is even more effective when used in conjunction with other treatments.

Can laser therapy be used over medical implants, or over metal?

Yes. Laser therapy is a light treatment, not a heat one. This means no heating will affect any surgical or metal implants. If you have any such medical equipment, MLS therapy is still completely safe and will produce no adverse side effects. Additionally, this is a highly-effective procedure that can be used to assist with postoperative wound healing.

How do I know if laser therapy is right for me?

We will be happy to evaluate your foot or ankle injury and determine if you are a candidate for this procedure. Call our office and request an evaluation or consultation with one of our doctors.

Benefits of MLS Laser Therapy

Naturally, patients also wonder about the benefits of this kind of treatment. We are pleased to let you know that some of the top benefits from laser therapy include:

  • Accelerated cellular growth and tissue repair. Cells absorb the photon energy, which results in faster growth and repair for our patients.
  • Improved immune function. Laser light stimulates immunoglobulins and lymphocytes, both of which are essential components of your immune system.
  • Improved vascular activity. The formation of new capillaries is particularly beneficial because this speeds up your healing process, reduces scar tissue, and closes wounds more quickly, thereby reducing your risk of potential infection.
  • Increased metabolic activity. Not only do damaged cells receive greater quantities of nutrients, oxygen, and water from the enhanced blood circulation, they are also able to take in and use the nourishment more efficiently.

If you have pain in your foot and ankle, our MLS laser therapy might just be the treatment option you want to improve your situation in a safe, quick, and effective manner.
